Why Mindset Shapes Success ?
The power of a growth mindset can completely change your perspective on success and failure. Have you ever seen someone succeed and thought, “they succeed because they are naturally talented?” If you are thinking like this, then you are wrong. Success and luck have nothing to do with naturally talented or intelligent. When we were born, the capabilities and abilities were the same. But later as the mind grew, it was programmed in different ways. That means it took shape according to the surrounding circumstances and according to the people.
In short, our mindset was built. So if someone is successful and unsuccessful, the difference between them is dependent on the mindset. If you want to achieve success, your mindset should be accordingly. Because the mind controls the overall body.
What is a Growth Mindset ?
The term growth mindset was popularized by psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck. She made some researches on human behaviour. She stared to study on how peoples deal with failure in late 1970s. She discovered something, that created big impact in psychology and education.
Dr. Carol Dweck gave puzzles to childrens, and asked them to solve them. Some childrens solved that puzzle very easily, while others were facing difficulties in solving puzzles. The childres who solved that puzzle said, ‘ I love good challenges.’ And others who finds difficulty were discouraged, avoiding to the harder tasks. (Source: Stanford News on Carol Dweck’s research)
This experiment leads her to identify core mindsets. She discovered two types of mindsets-
1) Fixed mindset:
These kinds of individuals believe in natural intelligence and talent. They avoid challenges, hard activities, and give up easily, when they do not receive positive results.
2) Growth mindset:
These individuals believe that, We can improve ourself by doing efforts and learning. They see failure as a learning.
Her research showed that students with a growth mindset perform well academically, are motivated and persistent for a long time. Her observation and research clears the growth mindset. Basically growth mindset means , to develop,to shape our mind into growth direction.
For example,
We give a tasks of climbing a tree to two individuals.
Now,
A person with fixed mindset might say, ‘ I am not good in climbing. This tree is very tall, It’s a natural talent to climb the tree, which I don’t have. So I can’t Climb this tree.”
A person with growth mindset might say, “o it’s tall tree , but I will try. I don’t know how to climb, but I will practice.”
I hope this example clears about the growth mindset.
