An additional 25% tariffs on India, PM Modi stands against Trump to protect farmers interests.

US tarrif on India Pm modi

US President Donald Trump doubles the tariffs on India to 50% over buying Russian oils. On Wednesday, Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on goods imported from India. PM Modi indirectly targeted Donald Trump by saying, India is ready for it, to protect farmers interests.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced an extra 25% tariffs on India. The total import duty will be charged at 50% on Indian goods by the US government. The extra 25% tariff was declared as the penalty over continued purchase of Russian crude oils. The first declared 25% tariffs were effective from the first of August.

Donald Trump offered 21 days for negotiation with India, and after 21 days the total 50% tariff will be applicable on Indian goods, as per the executive order signed by Trump. Indian stock markets fell after that announcement. The new tariff will be applied from August 27 (local time).

“I found that the government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing oil from the Russian Federation. In accordance with applicable laws, all articles imported from India into the territory of the United States are therefore subject to an additional ad valorem duty of 25%,” said Trump in a White House statement.

“India should think of not buying Russian oil if it is economically unviable but should not abandon Russian oil purchases simply to satisfy Washington. The US may find a new protest to tax against India,” said Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) founder Ajay Srivastava.

India has responded to Donald Trump with a strong statement. The ministry of external affairs called the new tariff “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable”. They explained that India buys Russian oils at market prices to meet the energy needs of its 1.4 billion people.

PM Modi also responded to the tariff issue by making an indirect statement on an additional 25% tariff without naming. India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers and fisher folk at any cost, said PM Modi.
