Closing bell: Sensex closed 166 pts lower, Nifty at 24,500, Wipro drops 2.5%, and sun pharma 2.37%

Stock market today: Indian benchmark indices closed in red for 2 continuous days. Sensex dropped 166 points, while Nifty fell by 75 points. PSU Bank and Nifty Bank tried to pull the markets. Wipro drops 2.5%, Sun Pharma 2.37%, and Jio Finance 2.37%, while Asian Paints gains 1.94%, HDFC Life 1.88%, and Mahindra and Mahindra 0.87%.

Indian benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty traded in red again on Wednesday’s trading session. The downfall continued its run, but the Nifty reached its strong base at 24500. BSE Sensex closed at 80543, 166 pts, or 0.21% lower, while Nifty ended 75 pts, or 0.31%, lower to settle at 24574. The downfall was seen on Wednesday’s markets, due to the US-declared tariff and the RBI decision to keep the repo rate unchanged at 5.5%.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced its monetary policy today, Wed, August 6, 2025, chaired by RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra. The RBI monetary policy committee (MPC) decided to keep the repo rate neutral at 5.5% and also announced its GDP growth forecast for FY26 at 6.5%.

Adani Ports shares jumped 2% at the opening and closed 0.65% up after its healthy Q1 results. The firm reported a 6% rise in net profits for Q1. Bharti Airtel shares surged over 3% after the firm reported a 43% rise in consolidated net profit of 5948 crore rupees for quarter one. The firm also reported 28.5% year-on-year growth in revenue at 49463 crore rupees.

Britannia dropped 4.36%, even after a good quarter one result. The firm reported a 10.51% rise in net profit to 504.88 crore rupees, and revenue increased by 4% for FY26 Q1. Wipro, Sun Pharma, Jio Finance, and Tech Mahindra dropped 2% each.

Asian Paints, HDFC Life, Mahindra and Mahindra, BEL, Coal India, Adani Ports, SBI, HDFC Bank, Trent, Hindustan Unilever, JSW Steel, Reliance Industries, and Kotak Bank.

Top losers

Wipro, Sun Pharma, Jio Finance, Tech Mahindra, IndusInd Bank, Infosys, Dr. Reddy’s Lab, Hero Motor Corp, Bajaj Finance, HCL Tech, Nestle India, Apollo Hospitals, Adani Enterprises, Grasim Industries, Tata Consumers, TCS, Cipla, Eternal, and Bajaj Finserv, and UltraTech Cement.

All sectoral indices closed in red except PSU Bank. Nifty IT was down by 1.75%, Nifty Media 1.18%, Nifty Pharma 2.03%, Nifty Realty 1.51%, and Nifty FMCG 0.90%, while Nifty PSU Bank rose 0.59%.
